Noctua NF-S12B FLX Review

September 14, 2009

Conclusion

Noctua are no stranger to the quirky land of cooling products. Although a relative newcomer they have managed to storm their way into the computers of many enthusiasts around the world. It’s no surprise though as today’s results reinforce the fact that Noctua’s fans not only provide an effective cooling solution, but also allows users to work, play (or whatever it is they do on their PCs) in a near silent environment.

So what does the NF-S12B have going for it? Well aside from it’s excellent performance the build quality is superb, there are no sharp edges or defects and the fan is presented beautifully in Noctua’s signature peach/brown colour scheme. The included extras are great too – vibration compensators help reduce excess noise created via direct fan contact on the chassis and the L.N.A (900RPM) and U.L.N.A (600RPM) adaptors allow for an even quieter rig should you not require the oomph of the default 1200RPM.

When you buy a Noctua fan you are buying into a well engineered product with countless hours of research into the latest Noctua technologies including SSO-Bearings, Smooth Commutation Drive 2 and Bevelled blade tips. Combined these features provide the perfect balance of airflow and static pressure, all within acceptable noise levels.

Noctua are on to another winner with the Noctua NF-S12B and will no doubt continue releasing great fans in the future. For a fan you can rely on to deliver the high levels of performance you come to expect from a premium product the Noctua NF-S12B is a real contender. Sure you could spend less on a cheaper fan that would “do the job”, but would it do it as well? Probably not. And what happens if it fails, you are left to fork out for a new fan.

With an incredible 6 years warranty the NF-S12B shows Noctua’s confidence in the products they release and the willingness to provide high levels of customer care which these days can be non-existent in many large businesses.

Pros:

Well packaged
Excellent build quality

Sleeved fan cable
Bevelled blade tips
Plenty of accessories
6 year warranty

Cons:

Expensive for a fan
Colour may not be to everyone’s taste

I award the Noctua our prestigious Highly Recommended award as it provides the perfect balance of airflow and silence albeit somewhat more expensive than the competition.

Thanks to Jakob and Noctua for providing the NF-S12B FLX for review! The NF-S12B is available at Novatech for £17.99.
